RP gov\'t asks clemency for 8 seafarers jailed in Iran

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine government has appealed to the Iranian judiciary to grant clemency to eight Filipino seamen who were convicted last year due to oil smuggling.

Cresente Relacion, executive director of the Office Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs (OUMWA) under the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), on Monday told GMANews.TV that last September 9, the consul general of the Philippine embassy in Iran had asked the Iranian judiciary to grant clemency to the seafarers.

“It’s up to the Iranian judiciary to decide whether it would reduce their sentence or lift the penalty imposed on them. But I think there’s a good chance that they will be granted clemency. At the very least, we are hoping that they would be allowed to go home after serving their time in jail,"
Relacion said.

The Filipinos were arrested in August of last year and were sentenced to two years in prison on September 23, 2007, along with three other foreigners. They were also slapped with a fine of US$5.3 million for oil smuggling in Iran.

Relacion said the Philippine government had contacted the families of the seamen to update them on the condition of their loved ones in jail.

“The seamen are not allowed to talk to members of their families on the phone. So we asked their families to write letters for them. The DFA could give the letters to our embassy in Iran and then forward them to the jailed seafarers," he said.

Philippine embassy officials in Iran have been visiting the jailed seamen and providing them with “basic necessities," according to Relacion.

“They (seamen) are fine and we are looking forward to the positive response of the Iranian judiciary to our request for clemency," the OUMWA official said. - GMANews.TV
