"A website offering global tech experts free trips to Wellington for job interviews has crashed under the weight of interest.

LookSee Wellington has been brought down due to high traffic volumes, but should be back up and running on Friday, according to a statement on the website.

"LookSee Wellington has gone viral," the statement said"

According to the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency (WREDA) a "significant number of them" were from the US, UK and Singapore, including some who currently hold senior roles at major tech brands, including Facebook, Google and Amazon.

"We're currently working on scaling up to handle the high volumes, so please check back in 24 hours."

LookSee Wellington is a new global talent search initiative, which is ratepayer-backed, aimed at addressing the capital's IT skills shortage.

Two weeks ago, more than 5000 tech professionals had registered their interest.

The 100 successful candidates, who have their flights and accommodation paid for, will attend a series of pre-arranged job interviews with employers who have roles that match their skills.

bout 100 IT professionals from a number of countries will descend on the capital in May.

The candidates, who have their flights and accommodation paid for, will attend a series of pre-arranged job interviews with employers who have roles that match their skills.

If an employer goes on to hire one of the 100 candidates - or hires an unsuccessful candidate who applied through the LookSee Wellington website - they must pay upwards of $9000.

The cost to bring each candidate to New Zealand for a week would be about $2750, which equates to about $275,000 for 100 candidates.

Media around the world have picked up the story.

"Get free flights to New Zealand," Lonely Planet told its readers.

"NZ will pay for your holiday if you agree to a job interview in Wellington," The Independent reported.

"Is this the best job interview EVER?," The Daily Mail asked, accompanied by sparkling photos of the capital city at night.

The publicity has resulted in people applying from all over the world, including some who hold senior roles at major tech brands, including Facebook, Google and Amazon, the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency said.

On Thursday, the website said it was still accepting new registrations until March 20, and once it was back up and running, potential candidates could create and submit a profile again.
