Catalogs are mere data which is required to run an impromptu.
It acts as a bridge between datawarehouse and meta data.

As far as i know there are 4 types of catalogs namely.

A catalog is a set of instructions containing information about the data items to be retrieved and the database columns in a user friendly way.A catalog acts as an interface between the End-user and the data base thereby hiding the complexities of the data base.

A catalog contains Folders,Calculations,Conditions(Filters) and prompts.Apart from these a catalog contain Metadata of the DB from where data has to be retrieved. There are four different types of catalogs available with Cognos. These are:

1. Personal Catalog
2. Distributed Catalog
3. Shared Catalog
4. Secured Catalog.

The Personal catalog is the default one.,Only the creator can make use of it.

The shared catalog means a catalog is kept in a common server, where users can access it to create reports using it.(A lan/wan is significant for users to work on a shared catalog)The drawback of this catalog is if the network traffic is high, practical difficulties emerge and users can\'t continue with work at ease.

A distributed catalog. I think the best catalog  because a copy is available with Master Distributed and users are given Personal copy of that.Any change in the master distributed reflects in the personal catalog.
