If you are using it in crosstab, then a solution in IBM

Steps: If you are Using the Go Sales & Retailers cognos sample create the following crosstab report.

1) Under Insertable objects pane, expand the Products query subject and drag Product name into the crosstab rows.

2) Under instertable objects pane, expand the Retailers query subject and drag the Retailer name to the right of the Product name in the crosstab.

3) Under instertable objects pane, expand the Orders query subject and drag the Order year to the column area of the crosstab.

4) Expand the Returned items folder under Orders query subject and drag the Returned quantity below Order year in the crosstab.
5) Click the toolbox icon at the bottom of the Insertable objects pane and drag a Query Calcution to the right of the Return quantity query item in the crosstab.(the right most Return quantity column). Give the Query Calculation the name Running Total.

6) Enter the following for the Running total query item expression.

Code: [Select]
running-total(([gosales_goretailers].[Orders].[Return quantity]) for [gosales_goretailers].[Orders].[Product name],[gosales_goretailers].[Orders].[Retailer name])

and click OK.

7) Select the Running Total column, right-click the mouse and select Data Format. Set the Format type to Number. Under the Properties section, set the Missing Value Characters to 0. Click OK.

8) Double-click on the Return quantity column title and replace the expression currently there with the following expression:

Code: [Select]
if ([gosales_goretailers].[Orders].[Return quantity] is missing or [gosales_goretailers].[Orders].[Return quantity]is null) then (0) else ([gosales_goretailers].[Orders].[Return quantity])
and click OK.

9) Select the Order year and sort the year in ascending order. Select the Sort button bar icon, just to the left of the summation button icon and choose Sort Ascending.
