WordPress 3.0 aka Thelonious ,  is the end product of the hardworking effort bestowed by the talented WP’s 218 contributors. As per the release announcement from the wordpress website, there are quite a number of major new features introduced in this release, including a svelte and sleek new default theme simply called Twenty Ten – 2010.  Theme editors now have all new APIs which help them easily customize headers, backgrounds, menus, post types and shortlinks. Now, isn’t that cool? Everything is given the gift to maximize  your creativeness and much faster blog customization.
Quoting WordPress:

Developers and network admins will appreciate the long-awaited merge of MU and WordPress, creating the new multi-site functionality which makes it possible to run one blog or ten million from the same installation. As a user, you will love the new lighter interface, the contextual help on every screen, the 1,217 bug fixes and feature enhancements, bulk updates so you can upgrade 15 plugins at once with a single click, and blah blah blah just watch the video.

It took me roughly around 5-10 minutes when i decided to upgrade this blog from WordPress 2.7 to WordPress 3.0 using the automatic upgrade feature seen on the WordPress Administrator Panel.  Along side, if you decided to upgrade this time, you may also consider upgrading your wordpress plugins to the latest set. Prior to the WordPress 3.0 release was the 2.9 version where one can upgrade these wordpress plugins in just one click of a button. Thanks to the BULK Upgrade option visible in the plugin section which is much more convenient and i only gotten it to experience with WP 3.0.

If you are aware of the file structure / taxonomy of the wordpress framework, and you plan to upgrade using the manual mode, here’s a step by step guide to do so courtesy from WordPress website.

1. Backup your database. This is definitely a must when upgrading because you don’t know what could  go wrong sduring the upgrading process. Pls read Backing Up Your Database for a detailed explanation.
2. You then need to Backup ALL your WordPress files in your WordPress directory. As i reiterated, you also need to backup the .htaccess file.
3. Verify the backups you created are there and usable. This is essential.
4. Set your blog to maintenance mode. And subsequently Deactivate ALL your Plugins.
5. Ensure first four steps are completed. Do not attempt the upgrade unless you have completed the first four steps.
6. Download the zip file and extract the WordPress package from http://wordpress.org/download/.
7. Delete the old WordPress files on your site/server, but DO NOT DELETE these items listed:
   • wp-config.php file; -> This contains your saved configuration file – Database name, password, host, table prefix.
   • wp-content folder; Special Exception: the wp-content/cache and the wp-content/plugins/widgets folders should be deleted.
   • wp-images folder;
   • wp-includes/languages/ folder–if you are using a language file do not delete that folder;
   • .htaccess file–if you have added custom rules to your .htaccess, do not delete it;
   • robots.txt file–if your blog lives in the root of your site (ie. the blog is the site) and you have created such a file, do not delete it.
8. Upload the new files from your computer’s hard drive to the appropriate WordPress folder on your site.
9. Once step 8 is done. Proceed to your website.  Run the WordPress upgrade program and follow the instructions on the screen.
10. Update Permalinks and .htaccess. Update your Permalink Structure and merge the custom rules, if necessary, into your.htaccess file.
11. Install updated Plugins and Themes. Please review the list of Plugins that work in Version 3.0. Check for Theme Compatibility with 3.0 and ask your Theme author for any new version.
12. Reactivate Plugins
13. Add security key definitions to the wp-config.php file
14. Review what has changed in WordPress

WordPress 3.0 FEATURES

This is totally making a difference to the world of social media and gradually transforming into a full-blown content management system like joomla, drupal, and the likes.

Here’s a glimpse of the functionalities made to WP 3.0, displayed in video.

So far, it’s been a really quick and easy upgrade for me. How about you?  If you have a blog running on WordPress and have made the decision to jump to 3.0, did you experience any problem with this system upgrade?

Not Found

The requested URL /Techronnati/wordpress/ibm-db2-cognos-tivoli-websphere-microsoft-google.html was not found on this server.

I was surprised. As a matter of fact, i was not expecting that to happen. Now you may probably ask, what the heck i was doing all along? You see, I was playing around on my wordpress’ permalinks structure, pretty much learning about Search Engine Optimization in the WordPress CMS. And so without much idea, i delved in and tried to investigate one by one that’s causing this error. Later on, i found out that WAMP or any other similar localhost webservers that can be run from a local computer do not have mod_rewrite enabled by default. I also discovered that the AllowOverride directive is set to none by default WAMP server installation, causing Apache to ignore an .htaccess file. If this is the case, your WordPress installation might return a 404 error, stating post not found and you would only be able to access your posts via a default permalink structure. I.E. http://localhost/yourwebsitefolder/?p=2. Collecting some information i got, here’s what i did.

1. Using a text editor, open your httpd.conf file. In WAMP server, this file can be found in the \apache\conf directory
2. Sift for the following line of code in that file.
   

   #LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so

3. Next, remove the # from the line as seen below to enable the module: Just for information, # symbol is actually a comment syntax for httpd.conf. So this should look like this.
   

   LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so

4. Then, search for AllowOverride in this httpd.conf file until you come to a line similar of the following:
   

   <Directory />
   Options FollowSymLinks
   AllowOverride none
   Order deny,allow
   Deny from all
   </Directory>

5. Verify if AllowOverride All is indicated. Change “none” to “all” if found otherwise so this should look like this.

<Directory />
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride All
Order deny,allow
Deny from all
</Directory>

6. Save the httpd.conf file and Restart your wamp server. (Click on the ‘moon’ in the icon tray and select Restart Services)
7. Login to your WordPress admin panel and set your custom permalink structure as desired. Then go view your site. Custom permalinks should now work on your localhost WAMP/XAMPP or other server.

Now that am back, let me thank everyone for keeping this blog ALIVE and well-read. And hear this good news… my google pagerank now has just turned 2. Yippee!! Sounds surprising… at least for me. All the while i thought i’m not doing pretty well in the google searches and other search engines. So, tell me is this just good luck? Or is it because Google has updated some technical stuffs and program algorithms on their crawlers which definitely affected my ranking? Or needless i say, should i expect this to happen knowing how long i have been into blogging?
Whatever comes in mind, let’s leave it that way for the meantime and let the engines do their thing. =)

I heard about XAMPP probably like 4 years ago about the same time i heard about Apache when i was taking part time classes at Phoenix one in Makati Philippines . I only got the chance, though, to use this probably like a year ago when i started learning about php and mysql. I was lucky enough to bump into this wonderful, excellent server. The same principles apply here just like WAMPP only that this can be installed for multi-platform env’t. It lets you view your php webpages on your browser without having to upload it to your webhost server, and this supports entirely PHP and MySql. This tool makes it very easy to make changes to your site (or blog) before you upload them.

You can grab a copy of the installation files at their website. IT’S TOTALLY FREE FOR USE. The best about Opensource technology. Installation is pretty much straight forward believe me. Just like WAMP, just unzip/unrar your package to your computer and that’s it! You just need to save your files or website inside htdocs folder found inside xampp folder. To define various websites, you can actually create folders inside the htdocs folder to separate each.

To test if it works, simply place http://localhost in the address bar of your browser. You should be able to view XAMPP’s control panel which would mean that you have successfully installed XAMPP in your system. Subsequently, if you want to create a testing environment for your WP blog, just simply create a new folder inside htdocs. Download WordPress and extract the contents inside the folder you’ve just created. Then go to http://localhost/folder-name, this should prompt you to the WP installation page where you can start defining your database location, username, password. You can refer to this site WP installation for step by step guide or you can read on my related topic link. If you decide not to use this XAMPP anymore, simply delete the xampp folder. You are already uninstalling the webserver itself. =) Try it for yourself. It’s a great webserver.

These include but not limited to:

• Error loading Contact and Partnerlinks pages which both have Contact Forms for submissions. (I tried to inactivate CForms 2 for the meantime while debugging the root cause of the error.)

• Google Sitemaps was rendering errors as not being recognized by Google WebMasters Site. Moreover, XSLT error is shown on the page when previewing the http://www.techronnati.com/blog/sitemap.xml in IE. Access is denied. But in FireFox Mozilla its showing like this.

In Internet Explorer

In Mozilla FireFox

• FireStats Image doesn’t load correctly in the page. ( initiated by FireStats Plugin)
• Ratings images had some irregular icon display behavior. Instead of showing the real icons i.e. stars i’ve set as the default display, it shows blank images. (initiated of WP Ratings Plugins)
• Error appearing in WP DashBoard (mine caused by Brokenlinks Plugin so i temporarily disabled it)

• Can’t attached pictures in post. Whenever im attaching images either by using Flexiload plugin or the default uploading facility of WP, it hangs and images are never attached.

It seems to me that a lot of related plugins i use are on errors on my site. Too bad i wasn’t able to capture other WP plugin error i encountered. I initially thought there must be something wrong on the CHMOD (short for CHange MODe, which is a UNIX/Linux command) permissions. I didn’t know much about this until recently when i began to search the internet for answers. But before i arrived to this conclusion, i did some random debugging first. I tried deactivating all the plugins then afterwards reactivating them one by one only to find out that some plugins are working properly as expected. Weird for my case because i just woke up one morning only to realize that my blog has a lot of errors on selected pages. Seriously though, I can’t really remember the last update i made on the plugins. There was only one purpose i had in mind and that was to make sure I improve my Site’s Google Ranking. Maybe i messed up my default CHMOD files as a result of these errors i got. At that time i wasn’t sure what was the real cause of the problem. You see, I needed all these WP plugins to work to my site to give a big boost to my visitor’s web experience. And as i investigated this problem, it looked like that my problem had something to do with “WRITE PERMISSIONS”. I consulted various websites and research about CHMOD permissions for wordpress but it seems that most WP Blog owners haven’t experienced what i have just encountered lately. So I experimented myself knowing little idea about CHMOD permissions. Until i began to recall somebody saying that it isn’t safe to have 777 CHMOD in the root of blog directory and other directories and files in it for security reasons [WordPress file permissions and security]. Then another wordpress user shared his experience which i am yet to implement it in my blog.

Directories should have permissions of 755. NEVER 777
All files should have permissions of 644.
If you do want to use the built-in editor, theme files should have permissions of 666. NEVER 777

I experimented this and change CHMOD Permissions to the following:

CHMOD permissions for File Folders under wp-plugin directory: 755

CHMOD permissions for File Attributes inside wp-plugin folder : 644

Upon changing the these folders, i was able to resolve all the errors i got on my WP Plugins

Conclusion and Lessons Learned:

I am yet to implement this suggested tip to WP-Cache Plugin (because of its security related issues- 777). But for now am happy that i was able to resolve some of the tough errors I encountered. For the meantime this should work. So to others who might be experiencing one of the above errors especially if this is plugin-related i suggest you try to verify if you have the right CHMOD of that plugin directory ( you can change permissions using Filezilla FTP or if you use Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 it’s possible) and its corresponding file attributes in it. I think this should be the first step when trying to debug a specific plugin-related error. Sometimes its a matter of changing the CHMOD permissions suitable to the affected plugin is what we needed. Who knows right? While i was doing this research, I came across a lot of unsolved plugin-related errors experienced by WP users. Maybe by just tweaking on your plugin CHMOD permissions, it may solve the mystery =)

Accdg to www.wampserver.com, WampServer is a Windows web development environment. It allows you to create web applications with Apache, PHP and the MySQL database. It also comes with PHPMyAdmin and SQLiteManager to easily manage your databases. For sure most Bloggers here are hosted via Apache, PHP, MySQL tandem especially those owning self-hosted blogs like myself- WP.

For those who doesn’t know it yet, Apache is a web server, which allows people with web browsers like Internet Explorer or Firefox to connect to a computer and see information there as web pages. MySQL is a database manager (that is, it keeps track of data in a highly organized way). PHP is a scripting language which can manipulate information held in a database and generate web pages afresh each time an element of content is requested from a browser. Other programs may also be included in a package, such as phpMyAdmin which provides a graphical interface for the MySQL database manager, or the alternative scripting languages Python or Perl. WampServer installs automatically (installer), and its usage is very intuitive. You will be able to tune your server without even touching the setting files. WampServer is the only packaged solution that will allow you to reproduce your production server. Once WampServer is installed, you have the possibility to add as many Apache, MySQL and PHP releases as you want.[wampserver.com]

 
After installing the WAMP Server, beside the clock display on your windows PC you would see an icon. And if you point your mouse to the icon, a pop up windows appears listing the server features and its settings something like this.

How to install WAMP Server:

Just simply double click on the file you downloaded and just follow the instructions in every pages you see in that installation. Everything seemed to be automatic. The WampServer package I got here has the latest releases of Apache, MySQL and PHP. You can download it [here].

Once you have installed WampServer on your windows machine (i used this in Windows Vista Ultimate edition.) The WAMPServer package consists the following releases:
 - Apache 2.2.8
 - MySQL 5.0.51b
 - PHP 5.2.6

Features and Functionalities

When you left click on WampServer’s icon, you will be able to:
- manage your Apache and MySQL services
- switch online/offline (give access to everyone or only localhost)
- install and switch Apache, MySQL and PHP releases
- manage your servers settings
- access your logs
- access your settings files
- create alias

When you right click the icon : this commands show
- change WampServer’s menu language
- access this page

How to start with WAMPSERVER
When you install WampServer, a “www” directory is created (generally c:\wamp\www). Create a directory inside for your project and put your PHP files in it.
Click on the link “Localhost” in the WampServer menu or open your browser and open the http://localhost address. By doing so, you should see this image below – The WAMPServer Page. This means that you are now able to set your localhost or 127.0.0.1 successfully. ****

**** Just be sure that you don’t conflict WAMPServer with IIS or Internet Information Services you have on your machine because you might experience  some conflicts with the port number. Apache actually listens to port 80 by default and you have to make sure that this is free for use by Apache. If you have IIS installed, port 80 will be locked hence you would get an error page or this page below would not show, in that case open ‘\apache\conf\httpd.conf’ and find this line: Listen 80. Change that number to another, this should work properly or maybe disable the IIS you have on your machine. Restart your browser and type in again http://localhost to check if it works.

Adding other Apache, MySQL and PHP releases

Did you know that WampServer allows you to install almost all the existing releases of Apache, PHP and MySQL? Yes, this is possible so you can reproduce exactly the settings of your production server. To add a new release, download it here and install it. When activating a release, you just need to click on the icon menu and activate the release that you want to use. See this image.

Wait until the WampServer icon become white again and start to work.

After installing WAMPServer and running it, this is the time you install WordPress for blogging.

INSTALLING WORDPRESS WITH WAMPSERVER

1. Go to  Downloads page of WordPress Website to get the latest WordPress installation package. After downloading, unzip the package, rename the folder to “wordpress”. Copy or move the whole folder inside the C:/wamp/www directory. You begin to install and setup blogs by typing in this URL address below in the browser (by the way, am using firefox in this image below). You need to setup file wp-config.php either manually or through web interface. However, we suggest to do it manually.

2: To do it manually, open the wordpress directory which you saved in c:/wamp/www folder and look for the the file wp-config-sample.php. This file contains the following defined variables as seen below.

3: Right click on the file “wp-config-sample.php” and rename it to “wp-config.php”

4.Then, use your desire text editor to open file “wp-config.php”

5. Replace the default MySQL Settings in your WordPress wp-config.php file. Follow the sample parameters below.

Database : wordpress
Username : wordpress
Password : wordpress
Host : localhost

6: After saving the file, go back to your browser and click to refresh/reload the page. Or you can directly go this URL: http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php

7. Refreshing the browser will open the installation page. If in case you were not directed to this page after typing in http://localhost/wordpress, double check the wp-config.php file you have saved if it has the same database information we have on our sample. Verify Step #5.  In the installation page, you can fill in your email address as well as the title for your WordPress which we suggest to use your domain name.  Enable this feature: “Allow my blog to appear in search engine like Google and Technorati”

8. Click the button “Install WordPress” to start installing wordpress on your machine. This will wait a little while. At the end you should get the confirmation page telling you that  WordPress installation was a “Success”. Then you also get the user “admin” with the temporary random password which you should immediately change after login your WordPress. **Please take note of the username and password here.

9. After clicking on the login link, you will be directed to a Login page of WordPress. Use the username and password which WordPress generated for you in step#8.

10. Your browser i.e. firefox might have a popup window asking you if you want to remember the username and password and you should select No because you opt to change it in a minute.

11. After logged in successfully, you should be in the main WordPress Dashboard for administrator.

12. Look for the Users tab as seen on the image below. This illustration is taken from WP ver 2.5 which may be different from lower versions of WordPress. Once clicked , you will be directed to Users Tab Options where you click on “Your Profile” which you can change the temporary random password to your desire one .

13. After clicking on the button “Update Profile”, you should get the confirmed message “Profile updated”.

14. When you click on the link “Visit Site” next to your domain name on the top left corner, you should go to the front page of your WordPress.

Congratulations! You’ve just finished installing and setting up WordPress on your WAMPServer. You can now start simulating and testing WP plugins, pictures in your blogs.

The site contains a lot of fonts to choose from. Never did i imagine that there are actually more than 10,000 fonts available in the internet. 500 of which can be found in this site Fonts500 and 10 of which are my top favorites. You see, fonts used to be one factor that makes your blog worth noticing and aesthetically appealing and when you choose the right font, color and size for the right target audience, it’ll surely be a big hit to you and to any reader of your blog. But for my case, i would definitely settle down to simple, clean and professional fonts. They seemed to match my “professional” motive especially when blogging about some technology and business topics . =) Here’s my Top 10 Web Fonts which could make your blog worth a second look (in no particular order). I also added my short review and history to know more about these font sizes (courtesy from Wikipedia). =)

Verdana – is a humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Matthew Carter for Microsoft Corporation, with hand-hinting done by Tom Rickner, then at Monotype. Demand for such a typeface was recognized by Virginia Howlett of Microsoft’s typography group. The name “Verdana” is based on a mix of verdant (something green, as in the Seattle area and the Evergreen state, Washington), and Ana (the name of Howlett’s eldest daughter). Verdana does a professional look and feel and thus recommended for formal bloggers and write up.

Trebuchet MS- is a humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Vincent Connare for the Microsoft Corporation in 1996. It is named after the trebuchet, a medieval siege engine. The name is a response from the puzzle question Vincent Connare heard from within Microsoft headquarters. The question was “can you make a trebuchet that could launch a person from main campus to the new consumer campus about a mile away? Mathematically is it possible and how?” Trebuchet MS has a distinctive informal look impression and thus recommended for those blogging about lifestyles, Trivia and Travel.

Georgia – is a what they term as The “New Age” Times New Roman. I think the mistake most bloggers make is they use this as their base content font. As suggested, Georgia works well as headings, but for me this is too formal in nature. Make sense if you blog about purely technical, scientific topics.

Tahoma – is a humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Matthew Carter for the Microsoft Corporation in 1994 with initial distribution along with Verdana for Windows 95. This is very somewhat similar to Verdana, but I think this is more effective when placed in the page’s content. This is personally what i use in Techronnati – not too formal , not too stylish. Just fit in the context. As suggested by some gurus, the Windows feel to this font makes it good for footer text and comments.

Lucida Sans Unicode/Lucida Grande is a relatively narrower sans serif font compared to Verdana and Tahoma. This is my personal favorite. I personally like this font for blog content. Lucida Grande is best for MAC Users. This works well for modern-looking templates. Font was designed to support the most commonly used characters defined in version 2.0 of the Unicode standard. It is a Sans variant of the Lucida font family and supports Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and Hebrew scripts, as well as all the letters used in the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Helvetica - is the name of a widely used sans-serif typeface developed in 1957 by Swiss typeface designer Max Miedinger. This was one of the best known fonts known during the 1950s-1960s which was overtaken by Arial when Microsoft introduce it as a typeface incorporated in desktop machines. Helvetica is commonly seen on newspapers and can also be implemented on your blog if you have a great taste for news and current events.

Rotis is large typeface family consisting of, Serif, Semi Serif, Semi Sans and Sans Serif font styles. Agfa Rotis Sans Serif was created for Agfa Compugraphic in 1989. The font styles are matched for weight and height to give consistency when mixed. Certain round characters have a distinctive calligraphic treatment which is apparent in all styles. This font is best for contemporary texts and hence an alternative in the blog content.

Arial MT – is a sans-serif typeface and computer font packaged with Microsoft Windows, other Microsoft software applications, Apple Mac OS X, and many PostScript computer printers. The typeface was designed in 1982 by Robin Nicholas and Patricia Saunders for Monotype Typography, with Type Solutions Inc. holding copyright (the Type Solutions Inc. copyright lasted until version 5.00). A good substitute for Helvetica, Arial is one of the standard fonts in the blogosphere.

Univers - (IPA: [ynivɛʀ], French: “universe”) is the name of a realist

sans-seriftypeface designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1957.Originally conceived and released by Deberny & Peignotin 1957, the type library was acquired in 1972 by Haas. Haas’sche Schriftgiesserei (Haas Type Foundry) was later folded into the D. Stempel AG and Linotype collection in 1985 and 1989 respectively.Good utility font. It works well as headings and blog posts. The only drawback, similar to Lucida Unicode Sans, is its reliance on font-smooting. This font has been a favorite of mine for its appearance in both Windows and Linux systems

Frutiger – is a sans-serif typeface by the Swiss type designer Adrian Frutiger. It was commissioned in 1968 by the newly built Charles De Gaulle International Airport at Roissy, France, which needed a new directional sign system. Instead of using one of his previously designed typefaces like Univers, Frutiger chose to design a new one. The new typeface, originally called Roissy, was completed in 1975 and installed at the airport the same year.

For some cases, this uploading feature works just fine for some other bloggers. There seemed to be inconsistencies about this error. Most often, the media uploader of my other blogs works just fine but for this blog – a self hosted blog it doesnt.  In search of this topic, fortunately i was able to collate the possible tricks and solutions to this problem. Please refer below.

Option 1: Flexible Upload

This plugin is what i use in Techronnati. This became very helpful as there are times that i needed to upload pictures simultaneouly on my blog. As you import and activate it, it will try to override the default WordPress 2.5 upload frame. One of the good things about this plugin is that you are able to resize the images and place watermarks in your photos. I highly recommend you check out this plugin. You can get the plugin here.

Option 2: Edit .htaccess

If you tried installing the plugin above and error still persisted, then you might want to try this option. Probably there was some problem with your hosts’ security settings. From the forum, they say there is a fix for this. You need to create a .htaccess file in your /wp-admin/ directory with the following:

<Files async-upload.php>
SecFilterEngine Off
SecFilterScanPOST Off
</Files>
</IfModule>

This may fix your problem, or it may not work to some. I haven’t tried this actually as Flexible Upload already worked for me but some wordpress users i know had this solution and fortunately it worked for them. So you may want to try that one too.

Option 3: No Flash Uploader

In WordPress 2.5, the developers integrated Adobe Flash for the Image and Media Uploader. This new flash uploader, with a realtime upload progress bar, can support multiple file upload.  What it does is that it tries to disable the flash portion of your uploader, which may help those who don’t have a compatible browser. You can get the plugin at WordPress.org Website.

To solve this, the suggested solution was flash uploader should be disabled. To do this, a no flash uploader plugin may be used.

Option 4: Call 911 for help (either from Web Host or Forum)

If the possible fixes above wont work for you then maybe you can try reinstalling wordpress on your server. The forum i’ve been to says this problem would have been resolved on WordPress 2.6 version. But until this is released already as a stable version (-not in beta anymore) then you could try to reinstall WordPress 2.5 instead and just be stay tuned with the minor improvements from this version. Maybe something went wrong during the installation process (*** lacking files, etc…) or you could try calling your Webhosts’ attention to seek their help. =)

Thank goodness there’s Akismet which is short for: “Automattic Kismet” -> cool right? . It’s a blogging spam filter tool from wordpress. For those still unfamiliar, Akismet is an automated spam killer for blogging systems. Its a blog service which WordPress is currently using …for sure a lot of us who are into blogging and using WordPress…they are familiar with this. I can really attest to its effectiveness. Just today i just deleted more or less 50 spams comments on my blog.  This really works!!! I just dont know if other free blogging systems out there have something like this. Akismet works like this…. When a new comment, trackback, or pingback comes to your blog it is submitted to the Akismet web service which runs hundreds and thousands of tests on the comment and returns a thumbs up or thumbs down. when the plugin catches something as spam it saves it in the database for 15 days in case you want to check it out manually and then automattically deletes it. In the unlikely event something gets incorrectly identified as spam you can correct it and it submits the “false positive” back to Akismet for analysis and improvement of the ystem. If a spam comment happens to get through and you mark it as spam within WordPress, it does the same thing. Akismet becomes more effective the more you use it.

In the last 3 years that Akismet has been running, it has already caught over 6,330,937,480 spam comments, trackbacks and pingbacks while only just over 6 Million legitimate comments got thru. Now that’s a BILLION Akismet Spam Messages!.  The numbers speaks for itself — 89% of blog comments are spam (and that’s just thru Akismet). How about other tools out there??  The figure was around 64% when it was beta-tested in October 2005. You can see the trend escalating every month and I think its not surprising if this figure closes in to almost 98% by end of the year 2008. Oh and by the way, that’s just from spam bots. How about real people trolling around blogs out there trying to get the latest tidbits of your blog updates? If you’re running Akismet and you see spam getting thru, don’t just delete them. Tag them as spam so Akismet will learn from its mistake.
